BASEBALL DRAFT
SHAPES VOLCANOES ROSTER
The
San Francisco Giants approached the 2009 Major League Baseball First Year
Player Draft with the intent of drafting quality pitchers, and at first
glance, they certainly succeeded. Twenty-four of the fifty players
drafted on June 9th thru June 11th were pitchers;
twenty righthanded and 4 lefthanded. Three were drafted out of high
school, and twenty-one were drafted out of college. Leading the group of
new pitchers was first-round pick Zachary Wheeler, a 6-3, 180 #, righthanded high school pitcher out of East Paulding High School in
Georgia. Zach is said to have "plenty of fastball", a "plus" curve ball,
and a tremendous upside. The Giants then followed up in Round 4 with righthander Jason Stoffel, a 6-2, 220 # closer from the University of
Arizona, righthander Matthew Graham, a 6-4, 225 #, high schooler from
Oakridge High School in Texas who has "plus" arm strength, and has had his
fastball clocked at 95 mph, and righthander Jeremy Toole, a 6-4, 235 #
starter from Brigham Young University in the tenth round.
The
second draft pick is high school catcher, Thomas Joseph,
6-1,
215 #, from Horizon High School in Arizona. Scouts have reported he has
"light tower raw power". This spring was his first year catching, and he
is rated with an "above average arm".
The
third pick is Christopher Dominguez, a 6-5, 235 #, third baseman from the
University of Louisville.
At
pick number five was first baseman, Brandon Belt, 6-5, 210# from the
University of Texas.
Pick
number seven was Nick Liles, a second baseman from Western Carolina
University.
Outfielders rounded out the top ten as 8th pick Karl Benusa is
from Riverview High School in Pennsylvania, and the 9th pick,
Evan Crawford is a college outfielder from Indiana University.
Some
interesting statistics from the 2009 draft:
Out of the 50 draftees - 10 are high schoolers; 40 college players.
By position: 20 RHP, 4 LHP, 5 C, 4 1B, 1 2B, 4 3B, 3 SS & 9 OF.
By state: 11 Texas, 8 California, 5 Florida, 2 each from Georgia, Oklahoma, Lousiana, Indiana, Washington, and North Carolina, and one each from Connecticut, Alabama,
Iowa,New Hampshire, New York, Arkansas, Hawaii, Arizona, Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee,
and Puerto Rico.

VOLCANOES' POPULAR "HOST
FAMILY" PROGRAM BEGINS 13TH YEAR
An
Experience of a Life Time - Still Time to Host a Player
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, a Class A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, will arrive
soon in Salem-Keizer. The
franchise has a history of offering host family opportunities to local
families. The Volcanoes will
keep this tradition intact by living with families in the Salem-Keizer
area this summer. This is an
excellent opportunity to ‘live the life of a professional
athlete' through an ‘adopted player' for a few
months. Team members will
begin arriving on June 16th and will need housing for the period from
June 17th to approximately September 11th, depending on post-season
play. Interested families
should have a spare bedroom, live close to the Keizer
area or on public transportation routes or have alternative
transportation methods available for the players. Team members
averaged age is 20 - 22 years old.
The players do supply compensation to the families to help offset
their room and board expenses.
Families who would like more information on this exciting program
should contact, Kari Naughton at (503) 393-2311
or cell 503-930-1466 or Jerry Howard at 390-2225 ext 3002.

Volcanoes setup a Series of
Special Nights
as 'Stimulus' for Local Communities/Fans
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have created a series of Community Nights to
help make Volcanoes Baseball even more attractive for residents of
Salem, Keizer and the surrounding communities -- 30 communities in all
! The Volcanoes are rolling back the pricing for outfield general
admission tickets, on 'Your Night', to the prices when the Stadium first
opened 13 seasons ago -- to just $5.00 per seat
!! Fans simply need to show proof of
residency (driver's license, utility bill etc.), then fans can then
purchase up to 4 outfield general admission tickets, for 'your community
night' at the special $5.00 per ticket stimulus price! A full list of
Community Nights and dates are below. If you don't see your Community

CLUBHOUSE CHAT with JERRY WALKER
Words from the Co-Owner
The Stadium has been 'warmed up' and we are ready for
another fabulous season of Volcanoes Baseball. The Beavers and the
Ducks got things kicked off this year with a game at Volcanoes Stadium
on May 20th, when over 5,100 fans came to the Crater. Just a few
weeks later more than 5,000 fans again swarmed to the Stadium to see the
1A/2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A Oregon State High School Baseball
Championships. Congratulations to all the teams, especially our 'own' McNary
Celtics who won the 6A Championship! It's been an exciting time, and
the Volcanoes haven't even arrived yet. But they will soon. This
Wednesday night, the team will be arriving in Salem-Keizer. I hope you
are all out to greet the team for their first game, a pre-season game
against the All-Stars, on Friday, June 19th, and on Opening Night of the
Northwest League season, at home, on Tuesday, June 23.
Another opportunity to meet the Volcanoes will be on
Father's Day (Sunday, June 21), as the Stadium will
host its Annual Father's Day Breakfast in the Stadium's Lava Lodge from
9am to noon. A full breakfast will be served for just $6 (kids $4).
There will be fun interactive games for Dads and their kids, and the
opportunity to play catch on the Volcanoes field. The Volcanoes players
will also be available for autographs and photos from noon to 12:45pm.
During this time several Volcanoes players will compete in a Home Run
Derby. Sounds like FUN. It's all part of the Fan Fest activities
scheduled from 9am to 3pm on that day and it's all FREE, except the
breakfast -- tickets can be purchased in advance for the Father's Day
Breakfast by calling Bea at 503-390-2225 ext. 3007.
Volcanoes Stadium received another award recently. It
was named Best Sporting Venue in the Statesman Journal's "Best of the
Willamette Valley" poll. Along with many other awards, since then,
Volcanoes Stadium earned an Architectural Design Award from the American
Institute of Architects.
We are proud to announce
that baseball legend DON LARSEN will be returning to Volcanoes Stadium
on Thursday, June 25. Mr. Larsen's appearance will be part of "Legends
Night," an annual special event at the Stadium. Mr. Larsen will be
signing free autographs on the concourse for approximately one hour
before the game. After throwing out the honorary first pitch, Mr.
Larsen will continue signing autographs, and meeting fans, during the
first several innings of the game.
Thursday's game is
